ON THIS DAY March 9

March 9, 2009: Dhaka, Bangladesh. At first glance, Bably Akter looks like any other nine-year-old Bangladeshi girl, dressed in a brightly coloured pink and turquoise skirt and top trimmed with silver sequins.

A matching headband conceals her left ear, badly deformed and the only obvious sign she is the victim of an acid attack, a practice rampant in the impoverished country, used mainly in domestic disputes and against women and children.

As her mother, Parul, recounts the story of how Bably’s father put drops of acid on different parts of her body every day for five days when she was a baby, the little girl lifts her skirt to reveal a large scar on her legs and feet.

“Her father wanted a son. He’d been violent towards me before Bably was born but it was not until day five, when he actually fed her acid I realised something was seriously wrong,” Parul, 26, said.

She complained to the police but charges were never laid.

“We ran away and spent two years at the Acid Survivors’ Foundation (ASF) hospital where Bably had a lot of plastic surgery on her mouth. She still needs more operations.”

With her broad grin and her love of dancing, Bably speaks about her dreams of one day becoming a doctor to help others in the South Asian nation.

“She says she doesn’t remember what happened but sometimes she cries for no reason. Her speech is a little bit impaired and she gets teased at school,” Parul said.

The Dhaka-based ASF says most victims of acid attacks bear obvious physical scars, which make them pariahs. Bably is one of the lucky ones.

Efforts in Bangladesh in recent years to curb the practice mean cases are slowly declining, but human rights campaigners say acid remains too easy to buy.

“Acid throwing is rampant in the southern and northern parts of Bangladesh where it is used for dying the fishing nets and in the handloom industry,” said ASF doctor Imtiaz Bahar Choudhury.

Last year 179 people — three-quarters of those women and children — were victims of acid violence in Bangladesh, with 20 cases already recorded for 2009, according to the ASF.

The most common reasons for the attacks are disputes over property and dowry payments, and unrequited love where spurned suitors try to disfigure women who reject them.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said this week one woman in five around the globe has been a victim of rape or attempted rape, and that in some countries one woman in three has been beaten or subjected to some kind of violent act.

Violence against women is an abomination. I’d like to call it a crime against humanity,” Ban said ahead of International Women’s Day on Sunday.

The last major study into domestic violence in Bangladesh found that about 60 percent of women had been physically or sexually abused.

About 19 percent of those had experienced severe physical violence, defined as being hit with a fist or object, kicked or dragged, beaten up, choked, burnt, or threatened with a weapon.

Poverty, especially hunger, played a significant role in determining the degree and frequency of violence against women at home in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, where 40 percent of people live below the poverty line.

March 9, 2009: Badaber, Pakistan. A bomb-laden car exploded this morning in northwest Pakistan as police tried to pull a body from it, authorities said, killing seven police and a bystander
After an unknown caller told them a body was in a parked car, according to Police Chief Rahim Shah.
“Police went there. They found the white car. They also saw a body inside, but when they were pulling it out, the car bomb went off,” he said, calling the set-up a “new technique.”
Footage from the scene showed a police van whose front was decimated.

The attack occurred just outside the Khyber tribal region, a part of Pakistan’s semiautonomous tribal belt where military forces have staged offensives to stem militant activity. Pakistan recently claimed victory in an offensive against militants in Bajur, another tribal region. Officials also say they are close to flushing out militants in nearby Mohmand tribal area.

Four youths were publicly whipped in the Somali capital on Monday after an Islamist court convicted them of gang rape, in a demonstration of the U.N.-backed government’s inability to administer justice in this chaotic nation. Despite judge Abdul Haq’s insistence that the punishment would deter other rapes, the lashing was administered through the clothes of the accused and did not break their skin. Two of the youths smiled and laughed as they were punished.
March 9, 2009: Manchester, Britain

The story the daily mailed pulled is now up on the Mirror News.

Battered wife stabbed to death by the brutal husband she twice warned police about

Sabina Akhtar was stabbed to death by her brutal husband after TWICE warning police he would kill her.

She went to them for protection after Malik Mannan repeatedly told Sabina, 26, to prepare for her death.

Terrified, confused and struggling to make herself understood, the young mum told officers of the violence she had suffered at his hands. He had beaten her 25 times.

But, through an interpreter, Sabina made it plain she feared for her life, saying: “My husband is a man of an extremely violent nature. I genuinely believe if he gets the opportunity he will not hesitate to kill me.”

Meanwhile taxi driver Mannan, 36, who spent his wife’s benefit money on gambling and his mistress, was arrested twice and freed both times. On the second occasion bail restrictions preventing him from going near his wife were lifted.

Five days later she lay dead, stabbed through the heart with a kitchen knife. Murderer Mannan bought a new passport and a plane ticket with which he hoped to flee to Bangladesh.

Yesterday, after he was jailed for life, Sabina’s family attacked the Crown Prosecution Service for failing to save her by charging him earlier.

Mannan’s trial at Manchester crown court heard that, after a lawyer said there was not enough evidence against him, the brute sent a phone text to his fearful wife, boasting: “I am a free man, since 1.30.

Case file closed. Isn’t it great.” It was to be less than a week before he burst in the family home in Longsight, Manchester, to stab her.

The CPS has admitted it had failed Sabina and the Independent Police Complaints Commission is also to investigate.

The CPS said yesterday: “Sabina Akhtar’s family has been contacted and a meeting is being arranged at which we will apologise to them for the way the case was handled.”

A jury this week took just 20 minutes to convict Mannan of murder. Yesterday a judge said he must serve a minimum of 17 years.

The jury heard Sabina had become so terrified of her violent, adulterous husband that she had a panic alarm fitted at home. They wed in an arranged marriage in Bangladesh in 2003 following Mannan’s divorce from his first wife and had a son, Tahmid, two years later.

But in 2005 Sabina discovered Mannan’s gambling habit and that he had been having an affair with another woman, Suraiya Ali, by whom he had two children.

Mannan claimed he would end his cheating, but he carried on while spending Sabina and Tahmid’s benefit money on his mistress.

Sabina suffered in silence for two years until two days of beatings last year. In July, Mannan gripped her by her throat and lifted her in the air before throwing her to the floor and kicking her in the stomach.

He told her: “You have to listen to me. If you don’t listen, then one day I will kill you just like this. One day you will die in this way.”

Sabina went to the police, but no complaint was recorded because she was confused and struggled to explain herself.

The next morning, Mannan attacked again. Using both hands to squeeze her windpipe he told her to read her Koran warning: “This is your final hour.” The attack stopped when Mannan’s brother arrived, but he left shouting: “I’m going to get a knife and when I return I’m going to slaughter you.”

His trial heard Sabina was in fear of her life and went to a neighbour who phoned the police. With the interpreter’s help, they were able to take a long statement from her.

March 9 2009: Malmo, Sweden. Dozens of anti-Israel activists clashed with police Saturday as they tried to storm a closed arena where Sweden and Israel were playing a Davis Cup tennis match.

The activists hurled rocks and firecrackers at police vans as they tried to break through the barricades set up to keep protesters from the arena. Hundreds of riot police pushed them back using truncheons.
There were no immediate reports of injuries. At least five people were detained, police
spokesman Lars Hakan Lindholm said.

The clashes erupted after about 7,000 people gathered at a square in downtown Malmo to hear speeches condemning Israel’s operation in Gaza and urging support for Palestinians.

Organizers of the “stop the match” protest had said the demonstration would be peaceful, but extreme-left activists had vowed to disrupt the match, which is being played without fans in Malmo.
Swe
den’s Left Party leader Lars Ohly told the crowd that the European Union and the rest of the world should “boycott the racist regime in Israel.”
The protesters then marched toward the Baltic Hall arena, where some of them attacked the
police line with eggs, rocks and firecrackers.

The doubles match between Sweden and Israel started as planned before about 300 special guests invited by the two countries’ tennis federations. About 1,000 police from southern Sweden were deployed in Malmo to keep the protesters from entering the arena.

The Brandbergen Mosque, officially the Islamic Association in Brandbergen (Swedish: Muslimska Församlingen i Brandbergen) is a mosque located in Brandbergen, Haninge Municipality, south of Stockholm, Sweden.

The Brandbergen Mosque has been described by the FBI terrorism consultant Evan Kohlmann as a propaganda central for the Armed Islamic Group (GIA). According to Kohlmann, people connected to the mosque also participated in the financing of GIA:s bombing campaign in France in 1995.

In 2004 an Arabic-langugage manual, which carried the logo and address of the Brandbergen Mosque, was spread on the internet. The manual described the construction of simple chemical weapons, including how to build a chemical munition from an ordinary artillery round.

On December 7, 2006, the Swedish citizen Mohamed Moumou, who is described by the United States Department of the Treasury as an “uncontested leader of an extremist group centered around the Brandbergen Mosque in Stockholm”, was put on the United Nations Security Council Committee 1267 list of foreign terrorists.

In November 2006 the Islamic Association got permission to build a Muslim Cultural Center next to the city center. The cultural center will include an assembly hall, library, restaurant, gyms and baths. It is meant to serve as a meeting place for the area’s Muslims, as well as other residents.

Mohamed Moumou (Arabic: محمد مومو‎) (also known as Abu Qaswarah or Abu Sara) (born 30 July 1965) was a Moroccan-born Swedish national who was the No. 2 leader of al-Qaida in Iraq and the senior leader in Northern Iraq. He died in a building in Mosul during a shootout with American troops.

Born in Fez, Morocco, he was one of the founders of the militant Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group (Groupe Islamique Combattant Marocain, or GICM). Moumou immigrated to Sweden in the mid-1980s and gained Swedish citizenship in the mid-1990s.

In March 2004, Moumou was arrested in Copenhagen, Denmark, at the Morrocan authorities request for his alleged role in the 2003 Casablanca bombings. He was released by the Danish authorities after a month and sent back to Sweden.

In May 2006, he left for Iraq and never returned. While in Sweden, he was the “uncontested leader of an extremist group centered around the Brandbergen Mosque” in the Stockholm suburb of Haninge, according to the U.S. Treasury Department. Säpo, the Swedish intelligence agency, had been keeping an eye on him since the mid-1990s, suspecting him of leading an Islamist network that supported terrorism abroad. He was believed to be recruiting Jihadists to fight in Iraq from his base in Sweden. The Swedes also suspected that he had taken part in terrorist attacks and fought in Afghanistan in the 1990s. In December of 2006, he was placed on the UN and EU terrorist lists.

According to the U.S. military, Abu Qaswarah was a charismatic figure who became the senior commander in northern Iraq in June 2007 and was second in command of Al-Qaida in Iraq behind Abu Ayyub al-Masri. Allegedly, he was in charge of smuggling foreign fighters into northern Iraq and killed the fighters who did not want to attack Iraqis or carry out suicide missions. Prior to his death, a large number of Iraqi Christians were killed, and their murders were widely blamed on al-Qaida.[4] He is also accused of orchestrating the failed attack on the Mosul Civic Center, which if successful would have killed hundreds on Iraqi civilians.

According to the United States Department of the Treasury, Moumou traveled to Afghanistan in the mid 1990s to participate in the al-Qaeda-run Khalden training camp. According to TelQuel, Moumou was recruited in 1996 by Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi to serve as a “sleeping agent” in Stockholm.[6] Moumou reportedly served, at some time in the past, as “Abu Musab al-Zarqawi’s representative in Europe for issues related to chemical and biological weapons” He still reportedly maintains ties to “al-Zarqawi’s inner circle” in Iraq.

He is also the editor of the Al Ansar newsletter connected to the Algerian Armed Islamic Group (Groupe Islamique Armé, or GIA).

The U.S. military said that it tracked Abu Qaswarah to a building in Mosul, which served as a “key command and control location” for Al-Qaida in Iraq. On 5 October 2008, they entered the building, were fired upon, and during the shootout they killed five people, one of which was Abu Qaswarah.

His death was announced ten days later, when positive identification was made on his body.

Ha ha ha…. Look at the way Swedish TT report, via Swedish International Radio reports the story:

“A Swedish man is reported to have died in fighting in Iraq. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs say the Swedish citizen was killed during fighting by American forces. The Ministry have been trying to get in contact with the victim’s relations today, report TT news agency.”
